2K Said to Be Gearing Up for an Announcement on the Mafia Series

Apr18,2024

Mafia developer Hangar 13 has been working on the next game in the franchise for a few years. Official updates and information about the new Mafia title have been scarce since its existence was confirmed in 2022. The game was initially rumored to be a prequel, with plans to develop it in Unreal Engine 5. Now, almost two years after the unnamed Mafia game was first confirmed, publisher 2K is reportedly close to making an official announcement about the series.

A reliable games industry leaker has claimed that the Take-Two subsidiary is set to provide an update on the Mafia series. X In a post on Tuesday, video game researcher @Kurakasis said that 2K Mafia was preparing for the announcement. He said, “I can tell you that a few days ago, Take-Two began preparing an announcement regarding the Mafia series.”

The tipster said it's hard to say when 2K will announce, but we could see something in about three to four weeks, in line with the timeline of previous leaks. It's hard for me to put a timeline, but with Judas I see them preparing about 3-4 weeks before the release of the new trailer, so… soon,” Kurakasis said.

The same leaker previously revealed Judas, a first-person shooter from Take-Two-owned studio Ghost Story Games. The game was announced at The Game Awards 2022 through a reveal trailer.

However, Kurakasis cautioned that the Mafia series announcement would not necessarily be related to Mafia 4. It could also be a next-gen update to the Mafia: Trilogy, which includes a Mafia: Definitive Edition remake, a Mafia 2 remaster, and a port. Mafia 3, or something else entirely.

However, considering Hangar 13 is confirmed for 2022, the next Mafia game is more likely to be a new title in the series rather than a next-gen update. It is still unclear whether the upcoming game will continue the story of 2016's Mafia 3 or serve as a prequel to the previous Mafia games.

Mafia creator Hangar 13 is also launching Topspin 2K25 later this month, a revival of the popular tennis video game series. Tennis Sim is coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC on April 26.

In August 2022, Hangar 13 confirmed that a new Mafia game was in development. Studio general manager Roman Hladik said at the time that the new project was “a few years away” from officially launching.
