Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin missed out on becoming the fastest man to take 500 Test wickets for his country, taking 499 wickets as India defeated England by 106 runs in the second Test in Vizag. Ashwin was on the verge of surpassing Kumble to become the fastest Indian to take 500 wickets in the longest format of the game, but he could not achieve the feat before Ben Stokes' side were bowled out. But, Ashwin registered another unprecedented record in his name.
Ashwin registered his name in history by becoming the highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket against England. The off-spinner left legendary leg-spinner Bhagwat Chandrashekhar behind to achieve this milestone. Chandrashekhar took 95 wickets out of 23 wickets against England, which also included the feat of taking 8 five-wicket hauls.
Before the Vizag Test, Ashwin was 2 wickets short of making the record of the bowler taking the most wickets for India in a Test against England. He did not get any success in the first innings and failed to take even a single wicket. However, when it comes to the highest wicket takers in Test matches between India and England, Ashwin does not top the list.
Veteran fast bowler James Anderson, who took 3 wickets in the first innings of the Test match, is at the number one position with 144 wickets in 36 Test matches against India.
Fastest to 500 Test wickets:
- Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) in 87 matches
- Anil Kumble (India) in 105 matches
- Shane Warne (Australia) in 108 matches
- Glenn McGrath (Australia) in 110 matches
- Courtney Walsh (West Indies) in 129 matches
- James Anderson (England) in 129 matches
- Stuart Broad (England) in 140 matches
Ashwin took three wickets in the second innings of the Vizag Test, taking his total number of wickets to 499. But, it was the Jasprit Bumrah show that sealed India's win, helping the hosts level the series 1-1.
