60+ Vistara flights cancelled: DGCA norms not enough, fume flyers

Mumbai: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked Vistara To comply with relevant regulations relating to facilities and Compensation it should be paid passengers hit flight cancellation, delay and denial of boarding. However, passengers whose flights have been canceled or delayed have found that these criteria do not address some of their main concerns.

For example: For flight cancellations made within 24 hours of departure, the norms state that the airline should either provide an alternate flight or refund the ticket and a fine of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 depending on the length of journey. Compensation should be given.

For passengers who do not get a place on the alternate flight, this compensation amount hardly covers the cost they have to incur in purchasing last-minute tickets to their destination.
On Tuesday, Sushil Patni and his wife, both senior citizens, had to spend Rs 21,000 to book a ticket on IndiGo from Indore to Delhi after Vistara canceled their flight. They had an evening departure booked for Baku and hence could not wait for a day for alternative arrangements. Under the said rules, they will get a total compensation of Rs 15,000.

Again, the provisions mention free hotel accommodation only in case of flight delay, not in case of cancellation. It says the airline is required to provide hotel accommodation including food and refreshments, alternative flight/full refund of ticket to the passenger or transfers depending on the total flight delay. Airlines must provide hotel accommodation only if flights depart between 8 pm and 3 am for more than 24 hours or are delayed by more than six hours.
Passengers are highlighting these shortcomings on social media.
Sanjay Gupta posted on X that his daughters' flight was booked from Mopa-Goa to Delhi. “The flight has been delayed several times…the daughters are still stuck there. Vistara said, take the refund. What will you do then?”
Vamshi Papatla, an .
Sachin Chhabra, another passenger, posted on Twitter: “Who will bear our hotel and other booking expenses if Vistara cancels our flight at the last minute?”
