India's star opening batsman Shubman Gill on Saturday shared a picture with top tennis star Rohan Bopanna. The right-handed batsman posted a picture with the world number one men's doubles player on his official Instagram handle and called him an “absolute legend”. In the final match of the Australian Open men's doubles competition, Bopanna and Matthew Ebden defeated Italy's Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavasori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling match.
Bopanna-Ebden dominated on serve in the one-hour, 40-minute match, winning 80 per cent (40/50) of games with their first deliveries and not facing a break point to cap off a brilliant week.
Bopanna, who made his 17th Australian Open appearance in this edition, easily won his first Grand Slam men's doubles title. At the age of 43 years and 329 days, he also became the oldest Grand Slam champion.
The Indian tennis player is also the third Indian man to win a major men's doubles title in the Open era after Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi.
This was Bopanna's second Grand Slam win, his first in men's doubles. Her previous Grand Slam win came in the mixed doubles with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski at the 2017 French Open.
Talking about India's young opener Gill, he recently scored a century in the second Test of the ongoing five-match Test series against England in Visakhapatnam after failing in his previous 12 innings in the longest format of the game. .
