“This plant will help stabilize the grid, especially for reliability purposes,” Calpine strategic origination manager Emily Preach said at a press conference to unveil the project in Menifee, California.
“When people come home from work and they plug in their electric cars, turn on their dishwashers and air conditioners, there's a higher demand for electricity, (but) not as much solar production. “It protects the grid from the middle of the day (and) it will be moved to higher demand periods, helping to make the grid more resilient.”
New U.S. grid storage installations surged 98% last year, according to research firm Wood Mackenzie, which expects a 30% increase this year.
Wood Mackenzie said battery installations still face challenges and long interconnection queues that are slowing their expansion.
They will also have to contend with gas, which still provides more than half of California's electricity needs.
