‘Big controversy…’: AB de Villiers on Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain | Cricket News

New Delhi: hardik pandya is set to lead Mumbai Indians, replacing its five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy-winning captain Rohit Sharma In the 2024 season. Last November, Pandya returned to his former team Mumbai Indians via a trade with Gujarat Titans (GT).
The star all-rounder spent two seasons – 2022 and 2023 – with Gujarat Titans, helping them win the inaugural title in their debut season (in 2022).
South African cricketer AB de VilliersWho played 184 IPL games in his career, scoring over 5000 runs at an average of 39.71, including three centuries and 40 fifties, feels Mumbai Indians have moved on from the 'new captaincy' debate.
De Villiers also feels that the star-studded Mumbai Indians batting needs to perform in unison in the upcoming tournament in their quest for a sixth IPL title.

“Incredibly successful IPL team. They have won five titles. The big controversy in the last few months was that Hardik Pandya is coming in as the new captain replacing Rohit Sharma. They seem happy though. It looks like That they've moved on.” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel, “It's great to have Hardik Pandya in blue for his home team Mumbai Indians. He will start against Gujarat Titans, how ironic.”
On March 24, Mumbai Indians will face last year's runners-up Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
De Villiers, who played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in his 184-match IPL career, said Mumbai Indians will get a huge boost from the return of their star and key fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed IPL 2023 due to injury

“Boom Boom Bumrah. I am looking forward to seeing him playing again. We missed him in the IPL. He is completely back. We saw him perform for India in the Test series (against England). He was absolutely excellent. When the heat is on, you want Jasprit Bumrah in your team. He comes for you 9 times out of 10. He gets the big wicket of the opposition. And he is the big reason why Mumbai Indians have been so successful over the years. They have been successful since and they want to do that and play better than last year,” de Villiers said.
“MI have a big thing to prove. They have incredibly talented players. We need to get Sky back into form. We have Dewald Brevis. I hope he gets more game time. “There's a lot of talent on the team. They just need it.” To get the rhythm, especially in the batting order. We need Rohit Sharma in form. Ishan Kishan is above with Sky and Tilak Verma. Then they have Tim David and Dewald Brewis. If they are in form then this is a very powerful batting line-up. Which they have not been able to do. So, let's wait and see. I hope they do well,” he said.
Mumbai Indians won their five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
