Hardik Pandya will lead the five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. In December last year, MI acquired Hardik from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal and later made him captain. Rohit, who led MI to five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, will remain in the team but will no longer be the captain. Speaking on the surprise change made by Mumbai, South African great AB de Villiers said it has created a “huge controversy”.

“Mumbai Indians are an incredibly successful IPL team. They have won (the IPL title) five times. The big controversy in the last few months was that Hardik Pandya is coming in as the new captain in place of Rohit Sharma. Although they are happy Looks like it.” It seems they have moved on. It's great to have Hardik Pandya back in his home team, playing for Mumbai Indians. He will start against Gujarat Titans, how ironic,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

Last year's runners-up GT and MI will face each other in Ahmedabad on March 24. The fixture has gained a lot of hype due to star all-rounder Hardik's move to his former franchise MI after two stellar seasons with GT, which saw him win trophies with the team in his first season as captain, in 2022.

This time, while Pandya will take charge of MI, Shubman Gill has taken over the captaincy of GT.

The 17th season of the IPL will begin on March 22, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in a South Indian derby at their home ground – MA Chidambaram Stadium.

As of now, the schedule till April 7 has been revealed, the rest will be announced later due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the dates of which have not been notified yet.
