The renowned animation powerhouse, Studio Ghibli, is renowned for timeless classics like spirited Away and most recently, Academy Award winners boy and heron, is set to receive an honorary Palm d'Or at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival. This historic recognition marks the first time the award has been presented to a collective entity.

Founded in 1984 by visionary creators Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli emerged as a beacon of innovation following the release of Miyazaki's seminal work, Newbie of the Valley of the Wind,

Expressing his gratitude, Suzuki commented, “I am truly honored and pleased that the studio has been awarded the Honorary Palme d'Or.” He further reflected on the studio's journey and emphasized their commitment to producing high-quality animation for audiences around the world.

Cannes President Iris Knobloch and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux praised Studio Ghibli as an institution that has deeply influenced the world of cinema, saying, “For the first time in our history, it is not an individual but an institution is what we have chosen to celebrate. Like all icons of the Seventh Art, these characters fill our imaginations with exuberant, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narratives. Along with Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great feats of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.

Based in Tokyo, Studio Ghibli has produced a remarkable series of masterpieces under the guidance of Miyazaki Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro And howl's Moving Castle, Earlier this year, Miyazaki won his second Oscar for his critically acclaimed The boy and the heron, Coming for the first time in 2001 spirited Away.

The Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14 to May 25.
