Mumbai: two largest in the country cement player are increasing production capability, ultratechIndia's number one cement company is commissioning two new greenfield capacities totaling 5.4 million tonnes each in Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, taking its total capacity to 151.6 million tonnes. This capacity is 150% more than the US capacity and 80% more than the European capacity, UltraTech said.
Shree CementThe third largest player has inaugurated a new three million tonne plant in Andhra Pradesh, taking its capacity to 56.4 million tonnes. Built at an investment of Rs 2,500 crore, the Andhra Pradesh plant will be Shree Cement's sixth facility in the country and second in the southern region after Karnataka.

UltraTech owner Aditya Birla Group said it took 36 years to reach 100 million tonnes of capacity, but it added the next 50 million tonnes in less than five years. Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said, “Reaching this milestone symbolizes India's rise on the global stage and reflects the dynamism and scale of Indian corporations.” UltraTech will invest Rs 32,400 crore in ongoing capital expenditure over the next three years. In FY24, it had expanded capacity by 18.7 million tonnes.
Shree Cement said it commissioned the Andhra Pradesh plant six months ahead of schedule. “We are committed to growing responsibly,” said Neeraj Akhouri, MD, Shree Cement. About 75% of the plant's power requirements are met from renewable energy sources. The company had added capacity by 9.5 million tonnes in FY2024 through three new greenfield plants at an investment of over Rs 7,000 crore.
