The state government of Espirito Santos said Sunday that 15 people had died and about 5,000 were forced from their homes due to heavy rains since Friday night. Rio officials reported eight deaths on Saturday.
Thirteen deaths in Espírito Santo were recorded in Mimoso do Sul, a rural town 74 kilometers (46 mi) south of the state capital Vitoria.
Rescue teams in both states had to halt their work on Friday night due to new landslide threats, with efforts resuming on Saturday afternoon.
Mayors and governors in Brazil's southeast region have been warning residents since Thursday about possible problems over the weekend. A government warning of heavy rain in Espirito Santo state is valid until midnight local time.
