Dwarakish-Vishnuvardhan: A Kalla-Kulla combination that did wonders at box office

Actor-producer Dwarakish and superstar Vishnuvardhan formed a combination that produced some of the biggest hits in Kannada cinema between the 1970s and 1980s. Dwarakish never played second fiddle to Vishnuvardhan, but played equally important roles in successful films. Kalla Kulla (1975), kittu puttu (1977), singaporenalli king rinse (1978), guru disciple (1981), and gargantuan rinse (1984).

“The entertainment value of these films was unmatched. During his tenure, Dwarakish was an astute producer and knew the pulse of the audience,” says historian and writer K. Puttaswamy says.

Harish Mallya, consulting curator of the Bengaluru International Film Festival, says that Dwarakish was a household name in the 80s. “His humor, his combination of expression and energy, was a great attraction. Dwarakish's films with Vishnuvardhan were known for hit songs (Peach comes peach – Sung by Kishore KumarNene Nenege, Doddavaralla Janaralla). Before the reunion, the differences between the two were a major loss for the industry. “Dwarakish worked with newcomers like Vinod Raj ,Dance Raja Dance), Shruti (Shruti), And Mudina Mawa (1983) with little success,” said senior film writer and author S. Shyam Prasad says.

Even after Aptamitra, The Dwarka-Vishnuvardhan friendship was never really revived. Dwarakish also faced a legal battle when Vishnuvardhan's family opposed the title of his film Vishnuvardhan, Starring Sudeep.
