French Formula One driver Esteban Ocon on Thursday confirmed his “strong relationship” with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team following Lewis Hamilton's dramatic switch to Scuderia Ferrari following the end of the 2024 season. Speaking to Sky Sports, Ocon said it was no “secret” that he was still a junior driver for Mercedes. “Obviously I still have a strong relationship with Mercedes, I'm still a junior driver for Mercedes, it's no secret to anyone,” Ocon said as quoted by Sky Sports. The Alpine F1 Team driver said he is “fully dedicated” to his current French team this season and is looking forward to the upcoming Formula One season. “But I'm completely dedicated to Alpine this year, I have to finish 24 races and we'll see where we finish,” he said.

“Formula 1 is fierce, a lot of things can happen as we see, but I'm ready to take the challenge,” he said.

After the news of Hamilton's departure was confirmed, many names came forward as to who could replace the seven-time world champion.

Earlier, Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, had confirmed that George Russell will be the next “lead driver” of the team after the end of the 2024 season.

“With all the Lewis discussion, the thing that isn't talked about enough is George. George has the potential to be the next lead driver in the team. He's of the generation of Lando (Norris) and (Charles) Leclerc and some Others,” Wolff said, according to Sky Sports.

Last week, Ferrari shocked the sporting world by announcing that the seven-time world champion would be joining the Italian team for the 2025 Formula One season on a multi-year contract.

The news ends Hamilton's 17-year relationship with Mercedes-Benz in F1 and its 11-year partnership with the works team.
