‘Euphoria’ star Hunter Schafer opens up about why she turns down trans roles

Known for her hugely popular role on HBO's, ExcitementActress Hunter Schafer has said that she has turned down several offers to play a trans character. in an interview with gqSchaefer expressed a desire to move away from being identified only by her trans status, and said she preferred to be seen simply as a girl without additional labels.

“As soon as I say it (trans), it's over. It took a while to learn that, and it also took a while to learn that I don't want to be that, and I think ultimately it's disrespectful to me and what I want to do. Especially after high school, I got tired of talking about it. I've worked so hard to get to where I am, getting through these rough points of my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.'

The actress felt hesitant to discuss her trans identity in interviews, as she feared it would detract from her professional achievements. Reflecting on her activism during high school, where she played a key role in challenging a discriminatory law in North Carolina, Schaefer highlights her desire to explore broader themes in her work beyond trans issues.

“I felt like I had to make my art as a reaction to everything that was happening in North Carolina, when really I didn't necessarily want to make art about that thing. I think I felt like, 'Oh, I'm trans. “I should make art about this.”

Schaefer is currently set to appear in Yorgos Lanthimos' next film, types of kindnessIt is scheduled to release in June this year.
