Former Sri Lankan captain admitted to hospital after horrific car accident

Former Sri Lanka captain Lahiru Thirimane was admitted to hospital after being involved in a horrific car accident in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka on Thursday. He was traveling in his car which met with a serious head-on collision and was then taken to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The exact nature of his injuries were not known but he is currently in stable condition. Reports claim that there was at least one other passenger in the car with Thirimane and that person is also undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Thirimane was currently playing for New York Strikers in Legends Cricket and the franchise has released an official statement regarding the incident.

“We wish to inform you that Lahiru Thirimane and his family were involved in a minor car accident while visiting the temple. Thankfully, he has been admitted to the hospital for observation.”

“Fortunately, after a thorough medical evaluation, we can confirm that they are all safe and well, with no cause for concern. We appreciate the concern and support everyone has shown us during this time. We wish them well.” “We request you to respect their privacy when they do so,” the statement said.

According to, Thirimane was on a pilgrimage when the accident occurred. The car collided with a lorry coming from the other side and was seriously damaged in the incident.

Thirimane played 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs and 26 T20 matches during his decade-long career. He was part of three T20 World Cup campaigns, including the victorious 2014 edition. He retired in July 2023.
