Google Pixel Tablet 2 Could Be in Works, Codenames Allegedly Surface in Latest Android Beta

Feb 8, 2024

The Google Pixel tablet with Tensor G2 chip and multipurpose magnetic charging speaker dock was launched during the company's I/O event in May last year. Now, the Pixel Tablet 2 is said to be in the works as a possible successor to the Pixel Tablet. The latest Android beta release reportedly includes two new codenames, pointing towards the development of a next-generation Pixel tablet.

A reference to the Pixel Tablet 2 in the first beta of Android 14 QPR3 for Pixel phones was spotted by 9to5Google. According to the report, the code includes two new entries – “Clementine” and “Kiyomi”. These codenames, which have never been seen before in beta, reportedly hint that Google is preparing a Pixel Tablet 2.

Recall that the first Pixel tablets were codenamed “Tangore” and “TangorePro”. Tangor is a hybrid fruit that combines a sweet orange with another citrus fruit. Clementine and Kiyomi, codenames found in the latest QPR beta release, are examples of tangers. Clementine is a common example of tangor, while Kiyomi is a tangor hybrid that originated in Japan. These clues reportedly indicate that the Pixel Tablet 2 is still in the works.

Similarly, there were reportedly two codenames for the Pixel tablet's bundled charging dock – “Corlan” and “Yuzu.” Google released only one doc. A second dock that was intended to offer only a charging function was never released. Google has kept the codename of its tablet based on fruit theme.

Google has not provided any details about the development of the Pixel Tablet 2. So, all these details should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The price of Pixel tablet starts at $499 (approximately Rs 40,900). It has a 10.95-inch WQXGA (1,600×2,560 pixels) screen. It is compatible with USI 2.0 touch pen. The Android tablet is powered by Google's in-house octa-core Tensor G2 SoC and Titan M2 security chip. It has 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.1 inbuilt storage.

Pixel tablet has 8 megapixel front camera and 8 megapixel rear camera. It has quad speakers and offers Google Assistant support. It comes with a magnetic dock with pogo pin connector support. The tablet has a 27Wh battery.
