Hamas welcomes UN Security Council resolution calling for Gaza ceasefire


Cairo: Hamas said on Monday that it was welcomed United Nations Security Council resolution Gaza has called for a ceasefire and is prepared to engage in an immediate prisoner exchange with Israel.
The resolution, passed on Monday after the United States abstained from voting, calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza on October 7 after militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostage, according to Israeli data. In an update on Monday, Gaza's health ministry said at least 32,333 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza, while thousands more are feared buried under the debris.
The war is now in its sixth month United Nations has warned that at least 576,000 people in Gaza are on the brink of famine and is facing increasing global pressure on Israel to allow greater access for aid distribution.
