Delighted Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad termed the early dismissals of Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell as the turning point in the IPL opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mustafizur Rahman (4/29) blew away the top order as CSK restricted RCB to 173/6 on a good track. “We were in complete control right from the start,” Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation ceremony after CSK's six-wicket win.

He said, “There were 2-3 overs here and there but once the spinners and Fizz (Mustafizur) came, we were in control. Yes, it would have been better to have 10-15 runs less but they made a good comeback.”

For the CSK captain, Mustafizur sent back Du Plessis, who hit eight fours in 35 runs, and Deepak Chahar bowled an incisor to dismiss Maxwell, despite a 95-run partnership between Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik. Proved to be decisive.

“To get Maxwell and even Faf out, those quick wickets were the turning point. That helped us control the next five-six overs. That was the main point.”

Gaikwad said he has always enjoyed captaincy and with MS Dhoni still there to guide him, it never felt like a stressful first day in the office. “I have always enjoyed it. Haven't felt any extra pressure from the state. Not even once have I felt pressured into anything. Obviously Mahi Bhai was with me.” His counterpart Du Plessis admitted that he fell 20 runs short.

“You have to push in the first six overs. CSK squeeze you with their spinners. We lost a lot of wickets in the first six overs. We were 15-20 runs short on a pitch that was not as bad as the one we played on.” First 10 overs.

“We were always a little bit behind, trying to get ahead in the game. They were always ahead of the game,” Du Plessis said.
