In 2026, Oscars to add a category for casting directors

A new award will be added to the Oscars to recognize achievement in casting movies 2025 and beyond, issued by the Board of Governors of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Said on Thursday. Not counting the short-lived “Popular Film Oscar”, which never came to be, this is the first time the Academy has added a category since its inception in 2001 for Best Animated Feature Film. “As the Academy continues to grow, we are proud to add casting to the number of disciplines we recognize,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. The first statue will be awarded at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026. The Academy established the Casting Directors Branch in July 2013 and currently has approximately 160 members.

Guinness World Records on Thursday told Frenchman Richard Plaud that his 23.6-foot matchstick tower of the Eiffel Tower was a record height, a day after it was initially rejected for using the wrong matchstick. Plad said he was on an “emotional rollercoaster” after spending 4,200 hours over eight years building his model from more than 706,000 matchsticks and 23 kilograms of glue. Guinness initially stated that they did not use “commercially available” matches.
