New Delhi: India's first Gati Shakti Research Chair Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong will be established. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal said: “With the establishment of this chair in your prestigious institute, the North East is set to lead in research and development of multimodal logistics activities, capacity building and outputs. The student community will now get an opportunity to hone their skills and make a career in the field of logistics.
A strategic roundtable was also organized at the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Center for Policy Research and Analysis at IIM to discuss the multimodal logistics development strategy to link NER to broader national and international sectors to strengthen the local economy. . The meeting attempted to formulate a strategy for the development of a collective NER logistics policy in line with the National Logistics Mission as well as operationalization and implementation of policies related to multimodal logistics in NER.
Speaking on the prospects of the logistics sector in the Northeast, Sonowal said: “…the region witnessed revolutionary infrastructural advancements, growth in digital connectivity, abundant economic growth and many other significant achievements. The Narendra Modi government has invested over Rs 14 lakh crore in infrastructure development and connectivity of the Northeast. It is only with this commitment and intensive efforts that India's North-East has become the front and center of the development story of the new India. The newly inaugurated Gati Shakti Chair will act as a catalyst to realize the full potential of South Asia to emerge as an important logistics hub connecting South-East and East Asia.
The Gati Shakti Chair initiative aims to foster stronger collaboration between government and academia, leading to the development of high-quality public research in integrated, multi-modal logistics and supply chain resilience.
The platform will also play an important role in enhancing the capacity of students and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region to take full advantage of initiatives like PM Gati Shakti National Masterplan, National Logistics Policy and Unified. IIM Shillong will lead efforts to enrich the intellectual environment, enhance research capabilities, broaden research partnerships and strengthen the relationship between academicians and industry practitioners.
