IPL 2024 Playoffs: 2 Scenarios That Would See RCB Secure Top 4 Berth

May15,2024

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) got another big boost in their race for a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs after Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. The win ensured that LSG would not be able to overtake RCB in the points table even if they win their final league match of the campaign. DC's low net run rate also makes their task of securing a top 4 finish practically impossible. For RCB, the only team that remains in the way of making the playoffs is Chennai Super Kings.

The Bengaluru franchise is currently placed sixth on the points table with 6 wins (12 points) from 13 matches and a net run rate of +0.387. 5th-placed Delhi Capitals have 14 points from 14 matches with an NRR of -0.377.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are placed fourth, with two games left to play in the league campaign, with 14 points and an NRR of +0.406. CSK are in third place with 14 points from 13 matches and an NRR of +0.528.

How RCB can qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs:

Base condition:It is necessary for Royal Challengers Bangalore to win the match against Chennai Super Kings. If they don't win that competition, there's no way Faf du Plessis's team can secure a top 4 spot. If RCB beats CSK, they will either eliminate Ruturaj Gaikwad's team or Pat Cummins's SRH from the playoffs.

Scenario 1: RCB defeated CSK but their net run rate was low. In such a situation, RCB would like SRH to lose both its remaining league matches. Before the match against Punjab Kings, SRH have to face Gujarat Titans. If SRH loses both the matches then it will have only 14 points. RCB's win against CSK will also take their points to 14. In such a situation, RCB will only have to ensure that their NRR is better than SRH. In such a situation, both RCB and CSK will qualify for the top 4.

Scenario 2: If SRH wins even one of their next two matches, they will qualify for the playoffs. Such a scenario would mean that RCB can only overtake CSK in the race for the top 4. If SRH has already won, RCB will have to beat CSK by around 18 runs if they bat first and score 200 runs on the board. If RCB are bowling first and are given a target of 201 runs, they will have to achieve it with about 11 balls to spare. In such a situation, there will be a competition between RCB and SRH.
