I congratulate each one of you for winning the 2024 elections…you have created history,” Imran Khan urged. supporters protest peacefully if last resort Results have not been released.
The PML-N claimed victory on technical grounds, citing PTI's disqualification from participating in the election due to non-compliance with electoral laws. All PTI candidates contested elections independent,
Khan's close aide and media adviser Zulfi Bukhari told Reuters they would announce a party banner for independents to join within Sunday. In Pakistan, independent candidates cannot form a government on their own and are required to join a party. Independents are also not eligible to be allotted reserved seats, 70 of which are to be distributed according to party strength. Sharif's party can get up to 20 of these seats.
Sharif launched a post-election campaign for a unity government by reaching out to the PPP and smaller groups. However, this remains uncertain pending the court's decision on alleged vote manipulation. Several PTI candidates have approached the election watchdog and high courts in Lahore and Islamabad to secure victory.
The international community, including the US, Britain and the European Union, have called for an investigation into claims of electoral malpractice made by Khan's party. British Foreign Minister David Cameron's statement said “serious concerns were raised about the lack of fairness and inclusivity of the elections”. Pakistan's Foreign Office said that these statements ignore the indisputable fact that Pakistan conducted peaceful and successful general elections while dealing with serious security threats.
Amid the widespread circulation of videos of alleged voting rigging on X, authorities suspended the service again on Saturday. “After shutting down mobile services in Pakistan on election day, they have now blocked X in Pakistan because PTI was exposing rigging!!” Khan's party made allegations.
Voters also voted for their representatives in the four provincial assemblies.
In Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province, the PML-N is in the lead, while independent candidates are comfortably ahead in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PPP has won a majority in Sindh province, while a coalition government is expected in Balochistan, the country's largest province in terms of land, as no party has the seats required for a simple majority.
