Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton says a move to Ferrari for 2025 will add a new chapter to his illustrious career, but insists he hopes to leave Mercedes on a high note. The 39-year-old British player has been with Mercedes since 2013, but recently activated a break clause to move to the Italian team in 2025. “An opportunity came up in the New Year and I decided to take it,” Hamilton said. He described this decision as the most difficult decision he has ever taken. “We have had an incredible journey together, making history in the sport and that is something I am very proud of,” he said.

Hamilton – without a single win in two years – won six of his record-equalling seven world championships with the Silver Arrows.

“This chapter is still not over and I'm still 100 percent focused on performing for this team,” he insisted on Friday.

Mercedes has struggled to compete with rival Red Bull's Max Verstappen as Hamilton missed out on a record eighth world championship in 2021 in controversial fashion.

Reigning Formula One World Champion Verstappen won 19 of last season's 22 races and advanced to his third consecutive Drivers' Championship.

The opening Grand Prix of the F1 season is scheduled for Bahrain on March 2.
