Michael Bracewell Back From Injury To Captain New Zealand On Pakistan Tour

Apr3,2024

Michael Bracewell will captain New Zealand for the first time on their Twenty20 tour of Pakistan this month, which will be without many of the top names as they are playing in the Indian Premier League. Pakistan will host New Zealand for five Twenty20 Internationals starting in Rawalpindi from April 18 as both the teams prepare for the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June. In the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson, who is playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, all-rounder Bracewell was on Wednesday appointed captain on his return after being out for more than a year due to an injured Achilles and a broken finger.

The 33-year-old said he had a “golden three days” last month after being told he would captain New Zealand, taking eight wickets for his club Wellington and hitting a hole-in-one while playing golf.

“These are three days I will never forget,” Bracewell said.

“I'm very excited, it's a huge honor to be selected again for New Zealand and then to be chosen as captain after that. I didn't expect it.”

IPL contracted players Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner and Williamson are all missing.

New Zealand's Test captain Tim Southee is being rested after a busy summer of cricket across all formats, while Will Young, Tom Latham and Colin Munro are also unavailable.

Big-hitting batsman Tim Robinson and fast bowler Will O'Rourke received their first T20 team call-ups.

New Zealand selector Sam Wells said, “We have picked a team with a lot of strength and exciting bowling options.”

New Zealand won the five-match home Twenty20 series against Pakistan 4–1 in January.

New Zealand team:

Michael Bracewell (captain), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Jacob Duffy, Dean Foxcroft, Ben Lister, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Jimmy Neesham, Will O'Rourke, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi
