Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned Kolkata Knight Riders' decision to spend Rs 24.75 crore on Mitchell Starc for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Starc returned to the IPL auction after a gap of five years and became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction. KKR was involved in a bidding war with Gujarat Titans before eventually securing the services of the Australian fast bowler for Rs 24.75 crore.
On Starc going to KKR, Gavaskar said that no player is worth that much money.
“On top of that, to be frank. I don't think anyone is worth that kind of money. If Starc can make an impact and win four of the 14 matches he plays, you can say Can be worth that money. Then if he contributes in other games – absolutely fantastic,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
The great batsman further said that Starc will have to deliver match-winning bowling against top teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
“He will have to bowl match-winning bowling in at least four of the 14 matches, and probably in important matches against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and RCB, as all three of them have top-class batting lineups. Bowl to those teams. Out and you can still say – the money is worth it,” he said.
Starc last played for RCB in the IPL in 2014 and 2015. In 2018, KKR signed him for a price of Rs 9.40 crore, but he could not participate after suffering an injury.
Last year, Starc took 16 wickets in 10 matches as Australia won the 2023 ODI World Cup by defeating India in the final.
Starc became the second player to cross the Rs 20 crore mark after Sunrisers Hyderabad bought teammate Pat Cummins for Rs 20.5 crore on the same day in the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai on Tuesday.
He will return to IPL after a gap of eight years. In the 2014 edition, he showcased his bowling skills by taking 14 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 28.71.
The following year, Starc improved his performance and took 20 wickets in just 13 matches at an excellent average of 14.55. Notably, he achieved his best figures of 4/15 during the 2015 season.
