Pakistan court sentences 40-year-old woman to life for burning pages of Quran


Lahore: A Pakistani court in Punjab province has sentenced a 40-year-old woman life in prison After being found guilty of burning the pages of holy book of islam, a court official said on Friday. Asiya Bibi, a Muslim resident of Lahore's densely populated Bedian Road area, was arrested by police in 2021 on a complaint by a man from her area who accused her of burning a copy of the Quran outside her house.
“The Lahore sessions court on Thursday sentenced Asiya Bibi to life imprisonment on charges of insulting the Holy Quran,” a court official told PTI.
Later a case was registered against him under strict action blasphemy law Of the country.
Her lawyer, advocate Sarmad Ali, pointed out fundamental flaws in the case against Asiya, saying she had not committed any blasphemy and that her neighbor had falsely implicated her to settle personal scores.
Moreover, there are clear contradictions in the statements of prosecution witnesses, he said, and questioned why the main complainant was replaced by a police officer who was not a witness to the incident.
However, prosecutor Mohajib Awais said that Asiya was caught red-handed while burning a copy of the Quran, which was also recovered from the spot.
Sessions court judge Imran Shaikh, while announcing the verdict, said that “the prosecution has established its case beyond any reasonable doubt”.
Sarmad Ali said that Aasia Bibi will challenge the verdict in Lahore High Court and expressed hope of getting relief from the higher judiciary.
