Pakistan National Assembly recognises ‘injustice’ in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s conviction

Following the recent announcement of the Supreme Court's reserved opinion on the Presidential reference regarding the controversial death sentence imposed on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, it was declared that the former Prime Minister was denied a “fair trial”.
Led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faiz Isa, a nine-judge bench delivered its verdict on the long-debated presidential reference, asking whether it can re-evaluate its decision, the PPP and legal experts. A historical matter is considered important. injusticeARY News reported.
The motion moved by PPP MNA Shazia Mary urged the federal government to officially designate the first elected Prime Minister of Pakistan as a 'Shaheed' (martyr) and a 'National Democratic Hero'.
It also acknowledged the efforts of “Begum Nusrat Bhutto Sahiba, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and PPP workers who sacrificed their lives to establish this truth.”
Furthermore, the resolution lauded the unwavering efforts of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as well as the “determination” displayed by President Asif Ali Zardari in filing the presidential reference to reopen the case twelve years ago.
The resolution lauded the Supreme Court of Pakistan for finally acknowledging and accepting the “gross injustice” done to Shaheed Bhutto forty-four years ago.
In the light of the Supreme Court's decision, the resolution sought to overturn the unjust verdict in the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case.
Furthermore, it called for the establishment of the “Nishan-e-Zulfikar Ali Bhutto” award to honor individuals who have fought and sacrificed for true democracy in Pakistan.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto received the death penalty during the tenure of former military dictator General (retd) Ziaul Haq. Bhutto's trial on charges of murder of political rival Nawab Mohammad Ahmed Kasuri attracted international attention.
Despite appeals for clemency and mercy from several heads of state, Bhutto was hanged on April 4, 1979, marking an important chapter in the political history of Pakistan, ARY News reported.
