Chennai Super Kings lost their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, handing them their first defeat of the season. But, after seeing the special spectacle of MS Dhoni in Vizag, hardly any CSK fan will be in a sad mood despite the result. Although CSK fell short of their target by 20 runs, there was no dearth of entertainment as Dhoni played a brilliant inning of 37 runs in 16 balls. Some of the shots made by 'Thala' on the night brought back memories for the fans which were witnessed by the crowd. Dhoni is once again spreading the age-old magic.

Dhoni, now 42, performed so well with the bat that former Australia stars Brett Lee and Shane Watson appealed to CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to promote the wicketkeeper-batsman higher up the order.

“He was there tonight, there was no rust in him. I want more from him in terms of batting. Get yourself to the top of the order. He is excellent, his mind is still good and sharp, CSK please MS Dhoni Bring up the order.” the former Australian fast bowler said on Geo Cinema.

“With MS Dhoni being in this kind of form – it's what you want from him. He has the strength and skill under pressure to win games out of nowhere when bowlers are really struggling to perform. We have seen his ability many times throughout his career. Some of his shots he played tonight, it is as good a shot as I have seen him play. The shot over cover is one of the toughest shots to play, But he is still doing it,” said the former Australia all-rounder.

With the introduction of the Impact Substitute rule, CSK's middle order has become stronger. Against Delhi, hard-hitter Shivam Dubey came in as a substitute and sent Dhoni down the order.

However, with CSK looking to groom the next generation, it is difficult to see the management promoting Dhoni higher up the order as this could be his last season in the IPL as a player.
