“Problem Of Plenty”: ‘Shocked’ R Ashwin On SRH Captaincy Change Ahead Of IPL 2024

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed “surprise” at Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) decision to appoint Pat Cummins as captain. SRH sacked South African batsman Aiden Markram after just one season, despite leading their sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) to consecutive SA20 league titles. SRH roped in Cummins for a price of Rs 20.50 crore, before it was announced that Australia's World Cup-winning captain would lead the franchise in IPL 2024. Ashwin revealed that he did not expect the move, especially after what Markram achieved with the SEC. SA20 League.

“Sunrisers have won two titles in a row in the SA20. They have done it with two exceptional teams. I was actually quite surprised. They have made Pat Cummins the captain. I was a little apprehensive that they would go with Markram in the SA20. Had an extraordinary season for his franchise. The cross-pollination must have been amazing,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Admitting that Cummins is “unhinged” as far as overseas combinations are concerned, Ashwin suggested that the franchise could have “quite a problem” in the leadership department.

“Pat Cummins is a goofy guy. But with Cummins as a captain, they will have problems of abundance in the team with so many stars. Keeping Travis Head as the backup, they have Markram, Pat Cummins, (Henrique) Will pick Klaasen, and (Wanindu) Hasaranga. Because Hasaranga is an important aspect for them. If they decide that Hasaranga is not needed, then in some positions they can play (Fazalhaq) Faruqi or Marco Jansson in his place. That's what I thought because it makes sense,” he added.

Ahead of IPL 2024, Cummins, who has never captained a team in T20 cricket, said SRH are hoping for an “aggressive” start to the upcoming season.

“So, there's a bit of planning and then want to get off to a really good start. T20s are tough. Kolkata are a good team, but I think I'd like to see a really aggressive start to the season,” Cummins said.

Hyderabad will begin their IPL 2024 journey against the Kolkata-based franchise at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday.

He said his team has “exciting” young talent. The 30-year-old player said he is “super excited” to play alongside the young talent.

“I think we have a great mix. We have some more experienced guys like Bhuvi. Obviously Aiden Markram was the captain last year. But we have some exciting young talent. I'm extremely excited to see guys like Abhishek ” , Umran Malik, these are the kind of guys I've only seen a little bit of, but they're extremely excited, so I think the fans should be pretty excited for the upcoming season,” he added.
