New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir Highlights the ongoing debate over India's first-choice wicketkeeper for the upcoming t20 world cupclaiming his preference for Rishabh Pant Above sanju samson, Gambhir gave two main reasons behind his selection.
Gambhir highlighted the different batting positions of Pant and Samson in the Indian Premier League as a key factor in his decision-making process.
“Pant has batted in the middle order in the IPL, while Sanju has batted at the top,” he told Sportskeeda. He stressed the need for Pant's presence in the middle order given India's established top three players. Gambhir advocated the strategic advantage of the left-handed-right-handed combination, saying, “Being a left-handed batsman, Pant can bring variety to the team's middle order.”
Acknowledging the quality of both Pant and Samson, Gambhir reiterated his preference for Pant as a natural middle-order batsman suited to the team's needs.
“Looking at the composition of Team India, we need a wicketkeeper in that position and not at the top of the order,” he confirmed.

However, Gambhir also suggested that if the team management considers Samson more suitable for the role of a finisher, then they could select him in the playing eleven.
Gambhir acknowledged flexibility in selection depending on match conditions, saying, “But then, if they see that Sanju can score more runs at number six or seven, they can go with him as well.”
Gambhir stressed the importance of supporting whichever player is selected for the role and urged the team management and fans to support and nurture the selected wicketkeeper.
“Whoever plays, I think we should support that player,” he concluded, advocating patience and encouragement rather than unfair criticism in the event of a temporary dip in a player's form.
