Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has slammed critics who question Virat Kohli's place in the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. This comes after a report in Telegraph claimed that the Indian selectors are considering dropping Kohli from the squad for the major events in West Indies and USA. The former India captain was out of the T20 setup for over 14 months, before returning for the series against Afghanistan earlier this year.

However, Irfan faulted Kohli's absence from the team and criticized the player's critics.

“He has won matches in recent times, it is not fair to question his place. People questioning Virat Kohli's place in the T20 World Cup are from street cricket. I have no second thought about it, you You can't have your team without Virat Kohli because he is a very big batsman,'' Irfan told News24.

Explaining the importance of Kohli, Irfan told how the star batsman had single-handedly won the team matches during the ODI World Cup last year.

“We all saw what he did in the ODI World Cup last year, Virat Kohli single-handedly won 3-4 matches for India in the World Cup. If Kohli had not risen to the occasion, India would have gone 3-4. “He would have lost matches including the group-stage matches against Australia and New Zealand where India lost early wickets. He finished the match on his own,” he said.

Kohli finished the World Cup as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 765 runs at an average of 95.62.

He also topped the charts during the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

Kohli could not play the entire England Test series due to the birth of his son.

He is expected to return to action during the upcoming season of IPL. However, he has not joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore camp yet.

RCB will begin their IPL 2024 campaign with a match against title holders Chennai Super Kings on March 22.
