The Government of India provides various types of financial assistance to Indian students to help them in their education, whether they want to study in India or abroad. Some of the famous scholarships offered by the government include:
1. Central Sector Scholarship Scheme (CSSS): This scholarship is for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing further studies after class VIII in government or recognized private schools. This covers payment of the entire tuition fee, hostel expenses and annual maintenance allowance.

  • eligibility: College and university students who have performed exceptionally well in their studies (approximately top 20% or more in class 12th) and can prove that they come from economically struggling families (annual household income less than Rs 8 lakh Come from less).
  • benefits: The scholarship offers an annual amount ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000.

2. National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS): This scholarship is for students whose family income is less than Rs. 1.5 lakh annually. It is given to students from classes ninth to twelfth, depending on how well they performed in the previous year's examinations.

  • eligibility: Students from economically disadvantaged background (annual family income less than Rs 1.5 lakh) studying in class 9 to 12. Selection is based on both educational qualification and financial need.
  • benefits: Students can avail financial assistance up to Rs. 12,000 per year.

3. AICTE Progress Scholarship:This scholarship is for students who are studying technical subjects at diploma and undergraduate level. It provides financial assistance to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • eligibility: This scholarship is for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC) students pursuing postgraduate technical education programs like M.Tech, M.Arch and MBA.
  • benefits: It provides financial assistance to students belonging to these social categories.

4. AICTE Enabled Scholarship:This scholarship is designed for students with disabilities who are studying technical subjects. It provides financial assistance to assist with tuition fees and other related expenses.

  • eligibility: For students with disabilities who are studying technical programs like diploma or graduate degree.
  • benefits: Provides financial aid and additional support services to students with disabilities.

5. Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF): This fellowship is for students pursuing PhD in fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, Humanities or Law. It offers a generous fellowship and contingency grants.

  • eligibility:Open for PhD. Students enrolled in specific research areas such as science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and healthcare in PMRF-approved institutions.
  • benefits: Provides fellowship up to Rs. Rs 10.92 lakh annually for four years. Half the funding comes from the government, while the rest is sponsored by an industry partner.
