There's something therapeutic about staring out the window. It is relaxing and cathartic in equal amounts – whether one is sitting on a busy road or on a train watching the world go by. And while most of us would agree with RL Stevenson's sentiment, “Each a glimpse and gone forever”, Vivek Mathew has attempted to bring those moments to life through his work.

The Bengaluru-based photographer, who has been capturing life as he knows it through his lens for the last 18 years, says the photographs in the Gaze of Silence series, “were taken through glass in various forms and locations “

“These photos were taken at various locations like bus stops and cafes,” says Vivek, adding that some of the photos were of the interiors of Bengaluru's iconic Indian Coffee House on Church Street.

Vivek says the 24 images in this series, shot last year, “have a very painterly feel”. “Filmed through stained glass, window panes and glass sheets and under different lighting conditions, they give a nostalgic feel. This is particularly noticeable in images taken during rain – they have a 'behind glass' look to them,” he added.

Vivek, who passed out from The Light and Life Academy in Ooty, covers a wide range of subjects like architecture, nature and people with his work. “When I go out with my camera to take pictures, I go out with a blank mind,” he says.

Like most artists, Vivek does not title his works, as he believes that every viewer should view these photographs as if they were a work of art. “Since each person has a different perspective, they will interpret it in their own way. Why should I impose my viewpoint on a work by taking its name? An image that produces joy in one may produce despair in another. It's always better for the audience to connect with the work in a personal space.”
