Why MS Dhoni Decided To Relinquish CSK Captaincy? CSK CEO Explains

Mar22,2024

According to a report, MS Dhoni informed his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) teammates about his decision to step down from captaincy at the breakfast table on Thursday. The report said that Dhoni informed his teammates and support staff about his decision and later, he called the franchise management and informed them about the decision to hand over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan said that he was surprised when Dhoni told him about leaving the captaincy ahead of IPL 2024 and told that he wants to work on the transition with Gaikwad.

“He informed us of the decision after speaking to the head coach before the captain's meeting this morning,” Vishwanathan told The Indian Express.

“Mr N Srinivasan has handed over the charge to Dhoni and whatever decision he takes will always be in the best interest of the franchise. And he has been grooming Gaikwad on the field as well as off the field for the last few years. Vishwanathan said, Dhoni felt it was the right time to hand over to him because he felt Gaikwad was also ready.

Dhoni was appointed captain of CSK in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and under his leadership, the franchise won the title five times – the joint-most by any team along with Mumbai Indians.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming also supported Dhoni's decision.

“It was MS who had given a lot of thought and the future in mind based on last season's good performances. Times were good. Behind the scenes, Ruturaj and others have been going through courses to hone captaincy, especially on days like these. For, he said, “MS is the best judge when the opportunity arises.”

Fleming said Dhoni's announcement was a “low-key” event as preparations for it had been going on for almost two years.

“It was generally very low-key, and it soon turned into celebration, as the players embraced Ruturaj,” he said.

“Of course, it was a bit of a shock, but going back two years, the players and now former captain (Dhoni) handled it well when announcing the team's decision,” Fleming said.
