Why No Ranji Trophy Mandate For Hardik Pandya? BCCI Official Explains

It seems that Indian cricket is headed for a major change, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering making participation in the Ranji Trophy mandatory for certain categories of players. The change seems to have happened after the failure of Ishan Kishan, with the wicket-keeper batsman preferring individual training sessions instead of playing for his state team, Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy. The BCCI reportedly wants to see players like Ishan, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Chahar participate in the red-ball event. But, no such instructions have been issued yet to Hardik Pandya, who also focuses on individual training sessions.

When the BCCI official was asked about the reason behind giving Hardik the exemption, the explanation highlighted his injury record and how big an impact red-ball cricket can have on his body.

An official told The Times of India, “We can understand Hardik Pandya's case as his body cannot bear the rigors of red-ball cricket. He cannot cope with the workload of Test cricket and Team India He needs to be fit for ICC competitions.” ,

It is said that top BCCI officials were upset to see that some players were preferring IPL over red-ball cricket. Therefore, a stronger move is being considered by the board which could make it mandatory to play 3-4 Ranji Trophy matches to participate in the IPL.

“Some of the other youngsters, whenever you call them, they will say they are currently doing physio work. There is a need to stay somewhere,” a BCCI official told PTI.

The official further said, “The decision makers in the BCCI are well aware that some players do not want to play red-ball cricket.”

In many other countries, T20 cricket has been given priority and some players appear to favor the shortest format over traditional red-ball cricket.

Although the IPL has helped many cricketers open doors to the senior Indian national team, the BCCI does not want this to become the norm. Therefore, additional steps may be taken in the times to come to give more attention to tournaments like Ranji Trophy.
