In a column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar lauded Jaiswal's adaptability and ability to learn, particularly highlighting his significant improvement from the previous match.
Referring to Jaiswal's missed chances of a century in the first Test, Gavaskar said, “Yashvi Jaiswal sure showed that he is a quick learner, as he did by scoring a brilliant double in the first Test. During the match, Jaiswal showed his skill by scoring a brilliant inning of 209 runs off 290 balls, which included 19 fours and 7 sixes. Gavaskar emphasized the importance of Jaiswal's innings in handling the Indian innings, Especially when other batsmen “gifted their wickets away.”
Gavaskar said, “India definitely needed someone to take over the innings with a big century as once again most of the other batsmen performed as they did in the first Test and then gave away their wickets. Given.”
Jaiswal's exceptional form throughout the series has been remarkable, with the left-handed batsman emerging as the leading run-scorer. Scoring a total of 321 runs in 2 matches at an impressive average of 80.25 and a remarkable strike rate of 75.35, Jaiswal's aggressive approach has posed a significant challenge to the English bowlers.
Gavaskar also highlighted the importance of temperament in Test cricket and compared it to the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket.
“With the advent of T20 cricket and the need to play unpredictable shots, the temperament of batsmen can sometimes be badly affected,” he said.
After their defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad, India made a strong comeback to achieve an impressive 106-run win over England in the second Test, thus leveling the series at 1–1.
With the series now level, India will aim to take a 2-1 lead when they face England in the third Test starting at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot from February 15.
